Goethe-Zertifikat B2 exam: format, pass mark, fees
Exam structure
Goethe-Zertifikat B2 has four modules. You can take them separately or together. Lesen, Hören and Schreiben are written and taken in a group, and Sprechen is usually taken in pairs (alone in exceptional cases). If all four modules are held on one day, the written modules come first, with a break of at least 15 minutes between them.[1]
| Module | Teil | Time | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lesen | Teil 1–5, 30 questions | 65 minutes | 100 |
| Hören | Teil 1–4, 30 questions | about 40 minutes | 100 |
| Schreiben | Teil 1–2 | 75 minutes | 100 |
| Sprechen | Teil 1–2 | about 15 minutes in pairs, about 10 minutes alone; 15 minutes of preparation beforehand | 100 |
The written modules take about 180 minutes in total, not counting breaks. In Lesen and Hören each correct answer gives 1 point, and the 30 answers are multiplied by 3.33 to give 100 points; for example, 18 correct answers give 60 points. Copying the answers onto the Antwortbogen takes about 5 minutes, within the exam time. Schreiben is marked separately by two examiners, and the result is their average.[1]
How Sprechen works
- Preparation (15 minutes): you receive the tasks and, for Teil 1, choose one of two topics. You may make short notes on a sealed sheet of paper and use them in the exam.
- Teil 1 (about 4 minutes each): you take turns presenting the topic. At the end your partner and the examiner ask questions and you answer.
- Teil 2 (about 5 minutes): you discuss a controversial topic with your partner, giving reasons for your opinion and responding to their arguments.
There is a short introduction at the start, which is not marked. In an individual exam the examiner takes the role of the partner in the discussion.[1]
Score and pass rule
The maximum in each module is 100 points. A module is passed with at least 60 points. Grades: 90–100 sehr gut, 80–89 gut, 70–79 befriedigend, 60–69 ausreichend, 59 and below nicht bestanden.[1]
- A separate certificate for each module. A certificate is issued for every module you pass. The certificate for a module you retake later is combined with the earlier ones.[2]
- Combined certificate. If all four modules are passed at one centre in one session, you are entitled to a single certificate showing all four. If the centre is able to offer it, a combined certificate with your best results within one year can also be issued on request; outside the European Union this applies to modules taken at Goethe-Institut centres within one country. For this the centre may charge up to 25% of the exam price.[2]
- Retakes. You can take or retake modules as many times as the centre is able to offer.[1]
Ask the organisation that requires the certificate which modules it needs: some ask for all four modules on a single certificate.

How to prepare for each module
- Lesen. There are 5 Teile and 30 questions in 65 minutes, so about 12–13 minutes per Teil. Time each Teil separately in practice. To pass you need 18 correct answers out of 30.
- Hören. 4 Teile, 30 questions. The instructions for each Teil state how many times the text is played; read this in advance and look through the questions before the audio starts.
- Schreiben. In Teil 1 you write a forum post giving reasons for your opinion, and in Teil 2 a formal message (a request or a complaint). In both, answer every point in the task and do not mix formal and informal style.
- Sprechen. Give the Teil 1 presentation a clear structure: introduction, experience or example, advantage and disadvantage, conclusion. For Teil 2, practise phrases for agreeing, objecting and compromising (for example, "Da stimme ich Ihnen zu, aber ...", "Wie wäre es, wenn wir ...?").
The official practice set is free on the Goethe-Institut page.[5]

What score do you need to pass Goethe B2?
Each module is marked separately: a module is passed with at least 60 points out of 100. Modules are not added together, so if you score 55 in one module, 90 in another does not make up for it.

Is there preparation time in Goethe B2 Sprechen?
Yes, 15 minutes. Sprechen usually lasts about 15 minutes in pairs: in Teil 1 each of you presents a topic (about 4 minutes), and in Teil 2 you discuss together (about 5 minutes).
