Goethe A1 (Start Deutsch 1) exam: format, pass mark, fees

Exam structure

Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1 has four compulsory parts. Hören, Lesen and Schreiben together make up the written part: 65 minutes in total, with no break between the parts. Sprechen is held separately, in a group.[1]

PartTeilTimeRaw points
HörenTeil 1–3about 20 minutes15
LesenTeil 1–325 minutes15
SchreibenTeil 1–220 minutes15 (Teil 1: 5, Teil 2: 10)
SprechenTeil 1–3about 15 minutes, no preparation time15 (Teil 1: 3, Teil 2: 6, Teil 3: 6)

The exam usually starts with Hören. You then work on Lesen and Schreiben in the order you choose. You first mark your answers on the question paper and copy them to the answer sheet (Antwortbogen) at the end; about 5 minutes of the exam time is set aside for this. The Schreiben Teil 2 text is written directly on the Antwortbogen.[1]

Sprechen takes place in a group of up to 4 people, with two examiners. Each Teil lasts about 5 minutes. You receive the task in the exam itself, and no preparation time is given.[1]

Score and pass rule

The raw score of each part is multiplied by 1.66 and the results are added up. The maximum is 100 points: 75 points in the written part and 25 points in the oral part. To pass you need at least 60 points (60%) and you must sit all parts.[1]

PointsGrade (Prädikat)
90–100sehr gut
80–89gut
70–79befriedigend
60–69ausreichend
0–59nicht bestanden (not passed)

Schreiben Teil 2 and Sprechen are marked separately by two examiners, and the result is the average of the two marks. The official rules include one more important point: if you score fewer than 35 points in the written part, you will not reach 60 points even with full marks in Sprechen. The exam can only be retaken as a whole.[1]

Who it is for and how long to prepare

The Goethe-Institut recommends the exam for people over 16, but there is no minimum age limit. It states 80–200 teaching units (45 minutes each) to reach level A1.[2]

How to prepare for each part

Hören

  • Practise marking the answer on the paper first and copying it afterwards, because that is how you will work in the exam.
  • Practise recognising numbers, times, prices and dates by ear. These are the places where a small mistake costs points.

Lesen

  • There are 3 Teile in 25 minutes. Time yourself in practice and leave a few minutes for copying.
  • Each correct answer gives 1 point and nothing is deducted for a wrong one, so do not leave any blanks.

Schreiben

  • In Teil 1 each answer scores 1 or 0 points, so write details such as names, dates and numbers clearly and with correct spelling.
  • Teil 2 (10 points) is marked against criteria. Check that you have answered every point in the task, and write the text neatly on the Antwortbogen, because that is the version that is marked.

Sprechen

  • Teil 1: you introduce yourself using the given keywords, then spell one word and say one number. Practise the German alphabet and numbers out loud.
  • Teil 2: you ask the other candidates questions and answer theirs. Practise forming W-questions and yes/no questions.
  • Teil 3: you make a request or give an instruction and respond to what is said to you.[1]

You can view the official practice set free of charge on the Goethe-Institut page.[6]

On the day of the exam

  • Your identity is checked before the written part and again before Sprechen, so bring an identity document.[1]
  • The question papers are handed out without commentary, and all instructions are written on the paper. Learn words that appear in the tasks in advance, such as "ankreuzen", "ergänzen" and "Antwortbogen".
  • In Hören the audio is played by the invigilator. Mark your answers on the paper first and leave the copying until the end.
  • You choose the order of Lesen and Schreiben yourself. If writing is harder for you, do Schreiben first and give Lesen the remaining time, or the other way round. Try both orders in practice.
