Goethe-Zertifikat A2 exam: format, pass mark, fees

Exam structure

Goethe-Zertifikat A2 has a written and an oral part. The written part lasts 90 minutes and usually starts with Lesen, followed by Hören and then Schreiben. Sprechen is held separately.[1]

PartTeilTimePoints
LesenTeil 1–4, 20 questions30 minutes25
HörenTeil 1–4, 20 questionsabout 30 minutes25
SchreibenTeil 1–230 minutes25
SprechenTeil 1–3about 15 minutes in pairs, about 10 minutes alone; no preparation time25

In Lesen and Hören each correct answer gives 1 point, and the 20 answers are multiplied by 1.25 to give 25 points. Copying the answers onto the Antwortbogen takes about 3 minutes in each part, within the exam time. Schreiben is marked separately by two examiners (maximum 20 points, multiplied by 1.25).[1]

How Sprechen works

  • Teil 1 (about 3 minutes): you ask four questions based on the keywords on the task card and answer your partner's questions.
  • Teil 2 (about 3 minutes per candidate): you talk about yourself using the keywords on the card, and at the end you answer one or two questions from the examiner.
  • Teil 3 (about 5 minutes): you plan something together with your partner: you ask questions, make suggestions and respond to theirs.

In an individual exam you speak with the examiner.[1]

Score and pass rule

The maximum is 100 points: 75 points in the written part and 25 points in the oral part. To pass, three conditions must be met at the same time:[1]

  • at least 60 points in total;
  • at least 45 points in the written part (Lesen + Hören + Schreiben);
  • at least 15 points in the oral part (Sprechen).

If any one condition is not met, the whole exam counts as not passed. For example, if you score 58 points in the written part and 12 in Sprechen, you do not pass even though the total is 70. The grades are the same as in A1: 90–100 sehr gut, 80–89 gut, 70–79 befriedigend, 60–69 ausreichend, 59 and below nicht bestanden.

As an exception, and if the centre is able to offer it, you can retake only the oral part or only the whole written part. This is not a right of the candidate; the retake takes place within one year and at the centre where the first exam was held, and the centre may charge a fee.[1]

How to prepare for each part

  • Lesen and Hören. Each part has 20 questions. Time yourself in practice and leave 3 minutes for copying. Nothing is deducted for a wrong answer, so do not leave any blanks.
  • Schreiben. The text is marked against criteria. At the end, check that you have answered every point in the task.
  • Sprechen. You need at least 15 points in Sprechen on its own to pass, so do not leave it to the last week. Practise forming questions from a keyword for Teil 1, talking about yourself for 1–2 minutes for Teil 2, and phrases for making and declining suggestions for Teil 3 (for example, "Wie wäre es mit ...?", "Da kann ich leider nicht.").

The official practice set is free on the Goethe-Institut page.[4]

On the day of the exam

  • Your identity is checked before the written part and again before Sprechen, so bring an identity document.[1]
  • The written part usually starts with Lesen, then Hören, then Schreiben. The Hören audio is played by the invigilator and cannot be paused.
  • There is no preparation time in Sprechen, and you receive the task card in the exam itself. While you talk with your partner, ask them questions too and react to their answers, because Teil 1 and Teil 3 test exactly this kind of conversation.
